Posted November 14, 2018 07:21:52Designers should never spend more than $10,000 on design, a cost that would put designers in a bad financial situation, said Aaron Smith, the founder of design firm Designing for Designers.
“If you have a team of designers and they’re doing 10-20 hours a week, you should definitely be paying for them to spend more time,” he said.
“You shouldn’t just be doing this on the side.
You should be paying them to do their best.”
In a perfect world, Smith said, design would be the only expense you had to worry about.
But it doesn’t always work that way.
“The fact that it’s really expensive to do is because designers can’t really get enough of it,” he explained.
“I think that’s why it’s hard for people to make any meaningful purchases for their products.”
The good news, he said, is that there are many ways to save money on design: a good website, an online store, and an app for your phone.
“You should definitely go for an app if you can,” he added.
“It’ll save you a lot of money.”
Designing for designers, which started out as a hobby project, has since grown into a firm that helps designers create websites and apps.
They’ve worked with clients such as Nike, Netflix, and Airbnb to make websites that use less design resources.
“We can really help designers make money,” Smith said.
The goal is to save designers time and money.

“It’s very difficult to save a lot,” Smith explained.
“[You can] spend $100 on an iPhone 6, but if you bought a $250 iPhone 6S you’d only spend $10 on the iPhone 6s.”

“Don’t assume the developer will have a good design,” he told Ars.

While most people are aware of the need to design for a living, there are still a lot who are in the dark about the benefits of using the same tools as a professional designer.
“A lot of people think, ‘I’m just a developer, I’m going to do whatever they tell me to do,'” Smith said of the designer who has no experience in the industry.
“But the truth is that if you work with somebody who does, you’ll actually be learning from them a lot.”

“Designing a website is much more efficient, and if you do it right, it’ll create a lot better visibility for your business and get people talking,” said Matt Darr, the chief marketing officer of design agency Gilt.
