Downton’s season 5 will be the first of the show’s five to be shot in the UK.
This time, we’re getting a first look at the set and location of the series’ first set piece: the “Downtons”, a set of “spaceships” (we’re using the word loosely here) which look a lot like the ones from Star Trek.
It’s a good way to get an idea of the scale of the set, since it’s not much bigger than a football pitch, but the set itself will be a big departure from previous episodes in that it’s also set in the Downtons’ world.
We get to see a little more of the Dampens’ home, with the building and exterior scenes all set on a big flat roof, as well as a small apartment in the back yard.
The interior of the sets is also very different to previous episodes, with a lot more of a “small town” feel, as we see the Docks, and the house itself as a space rather than a “home”.
It’s also nice to see that the series is taking the same approach to the set design that DowntON Abbey took with its “spacedock” sets.
They’re all very much like that, with lots of windows and open spaces to the outside, so we get a feel for the Damps’ everyday life, as they can only see what’s coming over them from the outside.
We also get to explore the Dumpsters, where the Drapers and the Dunderheads live together, and we also get a first glimpse of the “downton” itself, which is a large, red and white car.
It is set in a dreary old house on the Dunes.
A new set piece is set to be filmed in the autumn of 2018, and it’ll be the start of what is expected to be a long, long run.
The Downtontains return in 2019, and although it’s been ten years since we last saw them, it seems as though there’s a lot of excitement in the air.
What do you think?
